The Public Safety Committee Advises on Matters Regarding: Public safety, generally, Violence prevention initiatives, Offender reentry, Dance, alcoholic beverage, and special events permitting, Civil defense, Domestic violence, Substance abuse control, Emergency medical services, Environmental health & safety, Fire protection, Human Rights Commission, Licenses and permits (as it relates to public safety), Obscenity and pornography protection, Police protection and Private security guards.
TASKS:
- Conducts public hearings concerning the determination of public nuisances and revocation of licenses and permits
- Advises the Council regarding opportunities for external support for improving public safety via funding and/or collaboration
- Develops and maintains relations with law enforcement and public safety entities including but not limited to US Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office
